Transformative Insights: 2023 International Rice Congress Experience
Lupakisyo Mwakyusa, an MSc student at Sokoine University of Agriculture (funded by DANIDA through the Climate-smart African Rice Research Project) shares his valuable experiences at the 6th International Rice Congress in Manila.
I take immense pride in having attended the International Rice Congress in Manila from October 16th to 19th, 2023. I am thrilled to share my experience from this remarkable event, an opportunity that would have been challenging to attend independently, were it not for the support of the project. This invaluable opportunity not only bolstered my career but also illuminated my path as a junior researcher, promising a brighter future ahead.Â
Numerous specific topics caught my attention, particularly the discussions on rice aroma, a pivotal attribute not to be overlooked even in my native Tanzania. The sessions on direct seeded rice and innovative technologies were particularly noteworthy, as they hold practical relevance for farmers in my country, where a significant portion practices direct seeding. Of all the topics covered, I particularly commend the innovations and research presented on breeding for low glycemic index rice. These examples only scratch the surface of the rich content explored. Overall, the sessions proved highly productive. At times, I felt a sense of frustration as I longed to attend all the sessions simultaneously, yet they were scheduled concurrently.
At the event, I was able to network with global members which turned acquaintances into a global rice research family. Sharing my research and engagement in the plenary and contributed sessions helped me understand global rice research. I commend IRRI for the flawless organization of the congress, from the warm welcome to outstanding logistics. This experience intensifies my anticipation for future opportunities, reinforcing my belief that rice symbolizes life.
